In-Store Ads Can Finally Prove They Work

Retail media began in the store, then moved online for one reason: online could prove it worked. That proof has now arrived inside the physical store. In a live deployment in the UAE, AiOO ran a fully measured, real-time in-store campaign. Shoppers exposed to it spent 61% more. This is the start of the in-store era, and it resets the economics for every brand, retailer, and agency.

Inside an AiOO-enabled aisle

Stand at the end of any grocery aisle and watch what happens. A shopper slows, picks up two brands, weighs them for a moment, and sets one in the cart. That choice, made in about three seconds and a few feet from the shelf, is the most valuable moment in all of advertising. It is also the moment the industry has understood the least.

Retail media did not begin online. It began here, in the store, with the endcap, the shelf-talker, and the sampling table. For most of its life it was the most physical medium there was. Then it moved online, and it moved for one reason above all others. Online could do the thing the store never could. It could prove that the advertising worked. Search and social taught a generation of marketers to expect a number behind every dollar spent, and retail media followed the proof onto the screen in everyone's pocket. Today it is one of the fastest growing forces in advertising, a roughly $200 billion business, built almost entirely on measurement the physical store could not offer.

Meanwhile the store stayed where it always was. Around 80% of consumer spending still happens inside it, in those same few feet and few seconds at the shelf. Screens went up by the thousands, but they stayed blind. They could not see who stood in front of them, could not adapt to what they showed in the moment, and could not tell anyone whether a single sale ever followed. The most valuable moment in commerce stayed the least accountable. That was never a commercial problem. It was a technology problem.

That is the problem we built AiOO to solve. Our platform gives the physical store the three things it always lacked: the ability to decide in real-time, to prove the result, and to optimize it. It reads the live, anonymous audience in front of each screen, with no facial recognition, no personal profiles and no individual identification, and decides which campaign to display to maximize expected sales, driven by real-time signals from the audience itself: shopping behavior, predicted intent, and anonymous demographic signals such as age, gender, and family group. Then, it attributes the outcome, matching the shoppers who were exposed to actual purchases at the register. And it closes the loop, learning from the shoppers who converted and the ones who did not, and using those signals to continuously optimize how the campaign performs. The campaign, the proof, and the optimization run on the same system, so nothing in between is left to estimate. Observe, optimize, prove. One platform, in real-time.

For twenty years, the industry moved its budgets toward whatever it could measure, and the store was the one place it could not. We have closed that gap. The store can now be bought, optimized, and proven like any channel online. Retail media is coming back to where it started, and this time it is accountable.

The in-store shopper journey, measured end-to-end

Online gives you a click. The store gives you the moment of decision.

The in-store shopper journey, from the shelf to proof at the register.

We recently put this to work in the United Arab Emirates, in a live deployment at Union Coop, one of the region's largest grocery retailers, on Hypermedia's in-store retail media network. The campaign was planned and activated by Omnicom Media Group. The platform measured the result in real-time, comparing the sales generated by shoppers who saw the campaign against shoppers who bought the same products but were not exposed to it, read directly from point-of-sale data. The gap between the two is the sales uplift. On that measure, exposed shoppers spent 61% more. Measuring uplift this way, live and exposed against unexposed, is itself new to the market. The early results have been striking. It is still early, but the signals already point to a new way to plan and prove media at the shelf. It is a promising start, and one all sides are eager to build on.

This is the shift. The store is no longer the channel you buy on faith while you measure everything else. For the brands that have spent a decade demanding accountability online, the shelf can now be bought with proof at the register instead of a promise. For the retailers who own the aisles, the most trafficked real estate in commerce becomes a measurable media business, with inventory advertisers will pay a premium for because it performs. For the agencies planning the next budget, in-store finally earns a real line, planned and optimized like search or social and defended with results. The money that has flowed almost entirely to online platforms now has a reason to follow the shopper back to where the buying actually happens.

Advances in AI, real-time computing and data infrastructure now make it possible to build the retail media around the living reality of the store and to measure the precise commercial outcome of every campaign. When each decision can learn from what is happening in the aisle, connect exposure to sales and continuously improve performance, retail media becomes a system that makes the point of purchase more useful to shoppers, more accountable to brands and more valuable to retailers.

The most valuable moment in advertising has been hiding in plain sight, at the end of every aisle, in every store, all along. The technology to read it, and to prove what it is worth, has finally arrived, and AiOO is the first to make the physical shelf measurable in real-time. This is the revolution in-store has waited for. That is what brings retail media home.

From impressions to outcomes. In real-time.

About AiOO

AiOO is the real-time, AI-powered platform for DOOH and in-store retail media, built for the physical world. It turns the largest unmeasured media channel on Earth, long measured by estimate rather than result, into a true performance channel for brands and retailers.

Built on proprietary AI, AiOO closes the three gaps that have always kept physical media from performing: who is in front of the screen, which campaign is most relevant in the moment, and what commercial impact it generates. With real-time intelligence and closed-loop measurement, it ties every transaction back to an impression, quantifies each campaign's incremental impact, and optimizes delivery toward stronger outcomes, whether the goal is brand building on DOOH or sales performance in-store.

AiOO operates from Dubai, Madrid, New York, Paris, and Rabat. Learn more at aiootech.com
